Lavender
(Lavandula stoechas / Lavandula angustifolia)
What it is
Lavender grows low and steady under the Portuguese sun. Grey-green leaves. Purple flowers that smell like calm.
In the wild here, it’s usually the variety with the small “ears” at the top of each flower head — soft, bright, easy to spot when in bloom.
It flowers from late spring into summer.
Where it grows
Dry hills. Rocky soil. Open sun.
You’ll find it in the Algarve, across the Alentejo, along quiet paths and in scrubland. It asks for very little. Just light and space.
Edible?
Yes — in small amounts.
The flowers can be added to tea, honey, or baking. A little goes a long way. Too much and the flavour turns bitter and soapy.
Harvest from clean areas, away from roads or sprayed land.
Medicine
Lavender supports the nervous system.
It calms.
It softens.
It helps with sleep.
A simple evening tea can ease tension. Diluted oil can be used on insect bites or rubbed gently at the temples.
Old, steady plant medicine.
A note
Use lightly.
Always dilute essential oil.
Listen to your body.
Lavender is the scent of stillness in hot air.
A reminder that even in dry earth, softness grows.
